INTRODUCTION TO AVIATION Part 3

In 1947 first commercial jet transport started

The jet engine which was in it’s infancy at the end of the war was the main factor for the vary rapid development of aviation. To put it simply it took 40 years form getting off the ground to the advent of the jet engine, and then 15 years later to take man in to space, and in another 10 years to put on  the moon.Days of the magnificent man in there flying machine unfortunately gone.It is unfortunate because flying then was an adventure. It was fun,it was dangerous ,and those that flew were looked upon either as rich fools,or brave man.To fly those airplanes.one had to be a ‘born pilot’ – one with a high aptitude to flying. He had to rely on his feelings ,on his ability to react quickly and to make decisions. He had to do all this by himself. He had to assistance,he had to decision making information. All he had was speed indicator and two or three other very basic instruments.

Today’s aircraft are highly complicated, computer controlled monsters that can carry over 500 passengers over half way across the world in a single day with probably one step.It will require only two pilots to fly this aircraft, compared to flight crew of 4-6 person a few years back.

Height is another important factor.Earlier piston engine aircraft like the supper constellation that flew from Landon to Australia via Colombo, flew at low heights. As you know the pressure drops with altitude and above 10,000 feet passenger need oxygen, and amount of air is insufficient for the engines. To overcome this, the cabin was pressurized  and the engines supercharged. But the today’s aircraft fly at 30,000 feet and attempts are being made to go higher.

Weather is very important factor in aviation.Forecasting weather was perfected during world war II when it become very important to have good weather for certain operation. For instance the dam Busters could not do there job unless they had good weather. In civil aviation, one can not delay passenger flights until you had good weather pilots had to fly in all weather and especially had to land in bad weather. To overcome weather related problems we got good instrumentation ,navigation equipment, and later automatic landing systems were introduce.

with the number of  aircraft fly in world today. especially in developed locations in Europe and USA and Asia, the chance of the collision is very great. To overcome an Air traffic control system ,and airways have been established no longer can aircraft be flown as pilots want to.They are controlled by Air traffic and they are asked to fly along airways – very similar to the highways.

Air traffic control is very much part of aviation and their duty.like police man on the road,to guide and control aircraft in the air. They should separate aircraft by height as much as cars our separate by distance apart .they should arrange to get aircraft descent, whilst other aircraft are climbing. They may have to  stack aircraft over airports and get them down one by one. They are also require to help pilots in difficulties in navigation or having technical troubles.Today all air traffic message are tape recorded so that it can be replayed in case of accident on complaint.

Engineers play vital role in aviation. It is they that designed the aircraft.they consider what it roles should be,how many passengers, how much cargo and what distance should it go .They then design the aircraft using the lightest materials with the required strength .Even proud saved is a proud earning revenue every day. They must select the best, economical engines, which are also designed and built by engineers. It is the skill of the engineers that will make an aircraft profitable or not.

Other than the design engineers,Who manufacture the aircraft ,Aviation needs the services of regular and this process should continue until death. It is very necessary that all those who wish to make aviation their career should undergo proper training, the proper acquisition of the aviation knowledge and practice.

AVIATION IS THE ONE OF FASTEST GROWING,AND THE MOST PROMISING OF PROFESSION TO TODAY.THERE IS A WORLDWIDE SHORTAGE OF PILOTS AND ENGINEERS,AND THESE POSTS ARE VERY HIGHLY PAID.YOU CAN ACHIEVE THESE HIGH STANDARDS ONLY BY HARD WORK AND PERSEVERANCE

My friend, Rachel Roberts, wrote a book about our area’s early aviator, Art Smith. He built his airplane in a garage. The early pioneers in flight were brave men:)
